Welcome to the Abbey of St Edmund, once one of the largest and wealthiest Benedictine abbeys in medieval England. We want people to have the best experience of the Abbey, and to protect it for future generations to enjoy. This image shows Cnut's Rotunda and the Abbey Church by Keith Burrows in 1989
The first patron saint of England and King of East Anglia, Saint Edmund was enshrined in the Abbey over one thousand years ago, and gave his name to the town that was built around it.
National and international visitors were attracted to the shrine, and The Abbey became one of the most famous and wealthy pilgrimage locations in England.
The Abbey of Saint Edmund is the jewel in the crown of Bury St Edmunds. A visit to the Abbey and the popular Abbey Gardens is a great way to discover more. New English Heritage interpretation panels coming soon.
In 2022, Bury St Edmunds will celebrate the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund by King Canute 1000 years ago. The anniversary will be marked with a year of special events and activities running all year.
The Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership brings together numerous local and regional organisations to care for the Abbey and explain its heritage. We will tell the story of the Abbey and its role in national and international history.
